Sgraffited Jug 13th Century
Round table jug decorated with sgraffiti. Through using the sgraffiting technique ornamental patterns are applied with an awl onto the painted surface of the pot before firing, which highlights the bright colour of the glaze.
On the opposite faces of the jug there are four circular motifs, around a central circular design containing a plant motif. Many of these jugs were meant for a specific religious function, or one related to popular beliefs, or for family or domestic use. The aim of the decoration is to give it a special feel.
