The International Workshop Pictores et officinae: documentation, study and valorization of the Roman mural painting of the Porticus of the Roman theater of Cartagena, will be held from June 19 to 24 in the auditorium of the Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena.
The recent archaeological interventions in the post scaenam porticus of the Roman theater of Cartagena under the financing of a European Next Generation project, as well as the research work carried out by professors Alicia Fernández and Gonzalo Castillo, within the R+D+ projects i of the Ministry of Innovation and Science and the State Research Agency (2017-2019 and 2019-2024) on Roman mural painting, among which are the pictorial sets of this building, are the starting point for the realization of this specialized workshop.
In this sense, the Roman Theater of Cartagena is currently one of the most important in the entire Roman Empire in terms of preserved pictorial decoration. The quality and volume of most of its sets provide an ideal workplace for the implementation of training in the activities of its correct process of documentation, consolidation, extraction, cleaning, study/analysis, restoration and enhancement. . This is precisely what is sought with this workshop and/or specialization workshop, that our professionals and/or graduates in Archaeology, History and/or Restoration implement their training to adequately face a material that, due to its fragmentary and precarious conservation, make difficult a job that is already complex.
Research on Roman mural painting in Spain is a recent discipline compared to other building decorative techniques; However, and despite the fact that we do not have a center specialized in studies of Roman mural painting as is the case in other countries, the collections have increased in the last twenty years thanks to the work of young researchers who, since the beginning of this century, have invested in along this line, as well as the growing awareness of Archeology professionals and the administration towards this material. This, between 2019 and 2022, has sought to hold two international conferences on Roman mural painting in the Region of Murcia, together with an exhibition located precisely in the temporary rooms of the Museum of the Roman Theater, that it has been a success with the public and that shows that the effort made in the last two decades is now paying off. This is precisely the interest and relevance of this specialization workshop, to continue in this line and respond to the social, scientific and professional demand that material as attractive as this is offering.
Work plan:
Morning sessions of field and laboratory work.

- Understand the different phases of study linked to Roman mural painting and stucco, mainly focused on their treatment and interpretation, a basic task for understanding their meaning
- Examine the different steps to follow in the process of consolidation/restoration of the paintings, whether they remain in situ at the site or are transferred to a museum.
