The exhibition FROM CARTAGENA TO CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ. A pilgrimage told in watercolor by Zacarías Cerezo, shows the viewer a selection of the most significant illustrations from the book walk painting, where the author captures the chronicle of his pilgrimage following in the footsteps of the apostle Santiago from the port of Santa Lucía in Cartagena, where Tradition says that the apostle set foot for the first time in Hispania, as far as Caravaca de la Cruz.
The author, as a painter, and chronicler of his own pilgrimage, has come to know the history and heritage of the Region, and as a pilgrim he has been able to discover within him motivations that were waiting for the moment to emerge. The publication of the book, thanks to the Camino de la Cruz Foundation, and being able to share it has been for Zacarías the climax that completes an extraordinary experience.

Zacarías says that to paint in Cartagena is to immerse oneself in its History, for him its light is one of the most suggestive in the Mediterranean, “tears epic words from its centuries-old stones; it is an old and young city at the same time, wise because of its past and seductive because of its present”.
The sanctuary of Caravaca de la Cruz is the final destination of the pilgrim and the artist, it is where people from all over the world come for the devotion to the Vera Cruz. The entrance through the gate of the wall leads to the imposing Baroque façade of the Basilica, inside everything is harmony and sobriety.
For Zacarías, the road from Cartagena to Caravaca is history, tradition and spirituality.
This exhibition has been possible thanks to the cooperation of the Roman Theater Foundation of Cartagena and the Caminos de la Cruz Foundation of Caravaca and their collaborating companies.
About Zacarias Cerezo
Zacarías Cerezo was born in Guadalupe, in the heart of Murcia's orchard, and at a very early age he felt a special interest in the landscape that surrounded him, always changing in the different seasons of the year. He finally opted for the watercolor technique, in which he finds his best communication tool.
In 1972 he made his first personal exhibition, he has exhibited mainly in Murcia, but also in Madrid, Barcelona and Italy, making it compatible with illustration in the press, mural painting, posters, record covers, children's books and travel books.
Since 2006 he has maintained a cultural exchange with the hometown of Nicolás Salzillo, Santa María Capua Vetere, which has given rise to important research on the sculptor, several exhibitions, two published books and a twinning project with the city of Murcia. He has always had an interest in roads, in general, and in pilgrimage routes in a special way, the result of which are his books: “Camino de Santiago. Watercolors of Travel” and “The Way of the Apostle. Walk to paint him”, and more recently “Salzillo, his Bethlehem in watercolor and verse”
