SUMMER COURSE 2023 UPCT: THE VIA AUGUSTA AS THE BACKbone OF ROMAN HISPANIA. THE REVALUATION OF A CULTURAL ITINERARY

Throughout the Spanish geography there is an extraordinary cultural heritage that connects the territory through ancient Roman roads and, more specifically, through the Via Augusta. From the Pyrenees to Gades passing through Tarraco and Carthago Nova, among other places, the Via Augusta was the longest Roman road in Hispania, it facilitated the advance and movement of the Roman legions at first, but it also served for administrative purposes and on all commercial, guaranteeing the transport of goods and trade between cities, territory and ports. In this course we intend to address the importance of this classical legacy and how it has affected the conservation and appreciation of its Archaeological Heritage, taking a tour of different scenarios and enclaves of Roman Hispania.

Cities, municipalities and towns were connected in antiquity and today share a common heritage that are also the hallmarks of their citizens, so we will analyze the case of cities such as Tarragona, Cádiz or Cartagena, municipalities such as Lucentum (Tossal de Manines, Alicante), Elicroca (Lorca), or towns such as Los Torrejones in Yecla, as well as newer studies such as the toponymy of Roman Hispania and its persistence in the territory. Milestones, funerary monuments and monumental arches were markers of that ancient landscape, such as the Arch of Augusto de Mengíbar (Jaén), are testimonies of this cultural journey.

In the sessions of the course, novel proposals will also be discussed, such as the “Cycling tourism along the Vía Augusta” project and the Route through the Roman Bética that covers territories through which the road passed and incorporates places and spaces of great scenic, cultural and natural interest. . The experience is based on the sustainable revaluation of the cultural itinerary of Via Augusta.
