XV AIPMA International Congress. ANTIQVA PICTVRA. Techniques and processes of execution, conservation and enhancement.

The University of Murcia, in collaboration with the International Association for Ancient Mural Painting (AIPMA), organizes the XV International Congress ANTIQVA PICTVRA. Techniques and processes of execution, conservation and enhancement, to be held from 12 to 16 September 2022 at the UPCT, Antiguo Cuartel de Instrucción de Marinería (CIM) in Cartagena.

Its aim is to provide a framework in which to accommodate the scientific exchange between researchers from around the Mediterranean, Europe and the United States, where all participants come from, as well as to include this port city in the reference circuit of Roman mural painting, and implement its importance at national and international level. To this end, its development has been structured in different thematic sessions from a transversal analysis perspective:

1. Dynamics of resource exploitation and productive processes.
2. Contextualizing the pictorial evidence: a transversal reading.
3. Recording, documentation, analysis and conservation of mural painting: a common code.
4. The communication and diffusion of mural painting in today's society: a transversal vision.
5. Past and present of ancient Roman painting.

In this edition we will work on the concept of technique in ancient painting, firstly, on arguments such as raw materials, elaboration, workshops and evolution (session 1) and, secondly, on recording and/or documentation and analysis that help from the excavation process to the interpretation and enhancement. This has made it possible to accommodate the participation of archaeologists, physico-chemists, restorers, conservators, architects and heritage managers, summarizing and putting on the same level all the concepts related to the studies on this material. For this reason, sessions have been established to study the socioeconomic, cultural, spatial, functional and symbolic aspects of an ensemble in relation to its material and temporal context (session 2), to deal with methods/techniques of recording, documentation, analysis and conservation of mural painting, both in situ and in museums, for its better study and enhancement (session 3), communication, dissemination and enhancement (session 4) and review of ensembles and study of new findings (session 5).

In this way, the congress will emphasize transversality, combining stylistic, technical-analytical, conservation and enhancement studies, with the understanding that some interventions will focus on treatment techniques, others on analysis techniques, and others may refer to everything as a whole.

As a complement to the thematic sessions in which the various communications will be developed, and following the dynamics of previous editions, two visits have been planned to allow participants to learn about the archaeological wealth of the city, especially at the pictorial level, serving at the same time as a mechanism for dissemination of research and enhancement of the archaeological heritage of Cartagena. In this sense, a visit will be made to the Museum of the Roman Forum and the Quarter of the Roman Forum of the Windlass to show participants the evolution of urban building and ornamental programs of the Curia, the Temple of Isis, the Atrium Building and the Baths of the port, as well as the material recovered and the phases of excavation in development (Monday, September 12). Along with this, there will be a visit to the exhibition "Amphitheaters" and the Municipal Archaeological Museum Enrique Escudero de Castro where you can see the important late Republican epigraphic collection, sculptural remains and musivarios, some of the pictorial programs of the city there exposed as those of the domusde Salvius (Wednesday, September 14).

The realization of this congress and the associated exhibition HISPANIAE PICTVM that can be visited in the Museum of the Roman Theater, make Cartagena the perfect place to support the research activity that is carried out in this regard in Spain, and specifically in this region, and of which Cartagena is one of its greatest exponents. At the same time, it allows us to bring the latest research and findings, such as the paintings of the Atrio del Molinete Building or the Roman Theater, to the most important specialists in their study on a global scale.
